Abstract
The alpha-fetoprotein containing cells(AFP cells) wree studied immunohistochemically in human primary hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), liver cirrhosis(LC), chronic active hepatitis(CHA), chronic persistent hepatitis(CPH) and fetal liver.
1) Fetal Liver : AFP cells began to appear at 5 gestation weeks with localized graznular immunostaining productions around perinuclear cytoplasm. With age, AFP cells appeared mainly around central vein and subcapsular area. After 14 gestation
weeks,
AFP cells were widely distributed throught tissue section with diffuse pattern. By 33 gestation weeks, intensity of immune response and frequency of AFP cells greatly decreased.
2) HCC : 8 cases of 11 HCC exhibited positive reaction and mainly perinuclear immunostaining production was observed. Neoplastic nodules composed of trabecula in 4-5 cell layers resembled the developing fetal liver. The distribution and the
frequency
of AFP cells in neoplastic nodules were variable. The amount of immunostaining productio in each AFP cell was inconstant but the intensity of immune staining was constant. FFP cells were present with increased frequency in the periphery of
neoplastic
trabeculae but this was not the case around the neoplastic connective tissue.
3) Liver Cirrhosis and Hepatitis : 2 cases among 12 cirrhosis exhibited very weak and diffuse positive reaction in the cytoplasm but no positive reaction was observed in 14 CAH and 3 CPH.
